Earlier this year the Naval Group and the Commonwealth of Australia confirmed that at least 60 per cent of the contract value for the 12 new Attack Class submarines will be spent in Australia, and included their joint commitment in the program’s Strategic Partnering Agreement.

Inclusion in the Strategic Partnering Agreement follows Naval Group’s long-standing commitment to maximise Australian content in the design and build of the Attack Class submarines, and its offer in 2020 that a local spend of at least 60 per cent be formally signed into the program contract.

Naval Group global Chief Executive Officer Pierre Eric Pommellet visited Australia last month, and met with Commonwealth officials for talks on matters including the joint 60 per cent agreement.

The Electric Vehicle Council (EVC) has welcomed the intent shown by the Victorian Government with its commitment to achieving half of all new car sales to be electric by 2030 and subsidies for new electric vehicle sales.

The Andrews Government has announced it will provide 20,000 subsidies of up to $3,000 for new electric vehicle purchases under $69,000, as part of a $100-million plan to encourage electric vehicle sales.

EVC chief executive Behyad Jafari said today’s announcement was a welcome step.

“This is exactly the kind of momentum we need in Australia if we want to join the rest of the world in embracing the transition to electric vehicles,” Mr Jafari said.

“We know from surveys that Australians are eager to get behind the wheel of an electric vehicle, they just need to know their governments will back that decision. Policies like this tell Australians that buying an electric vehicle is a choice they can make with confidence.

The Victorian Government has also announced a tax on the use of electric vehicles.

Meanwhile The Morrison and Marshall Governments have signed a $1.08 billion State Energy and Emissions Reduction Deal that will deliver secure, reliable, and affordable energy to South Australians and help Australia continue to meet and beat its emissions reduction targets.

Under the agreement, the governments will pursue initiatives that create additional dispatchable generation to help deliver affordable and reliable power, unlock gas supplies to help prevent shortfalls in the market, kick-start works on a new interconnector between South Australia and New South Wales, and invest in key emissions reduction projects.

$400 million of the Commonwealth funding will be used for investment in priority areas such as carbon capture and storage, electric vehicles, hydrogen, and other emissions reduction projects in South Australia to help meet and beat Australia's commitments under the Paris Agreement.

Australia is experiencing a surge in rooftop solar installations. October 11, 2020 was the first time in Australia’s history and for any major jurisdiction globally that solar power provided 100 per cent of a city’s energy needs.

For one hour between 12 noon and 1:00pm, South Australia was powered by the sun. Mild temperatures and cloudless skies contributed to ideal generation conditions in South Australia, with solar power from the state’s 288,000 rooftop systems providing 992 megawatts (MW) and large-scale solar 313 MW to power the state.

AEMO Managing Director and CEO, Audrey Zibelman, said that this milestone affirms the world-leading scale and pace of transition underway in Australia’s power system.

“Never before has a jurisdiction the size of South Australia been completely run be solar power, with consumers’ rooftop solar systems contributing 77 per cent,” she said.

AEMO’s Integrated System Plan (ISP) forecasts that by 2040, 63 percent of coal generation will need to be replaced with grid-scale renewable energy (26 gigawatts) and dispatchable resources (6 to 19 GW). Distributed energy sources, such as rooftop solar PV and residential batteries, are also expected to double or triple in capacity by 2040.

Ms Zibelman says AEMO is forecasting an additional 36,000 new rooftop solar systems by the end of 2021 in South Australia alone, “which will mean that the state's grid will see zero demand as rooftop solar alone will be capable of meeting 100 per cent of demand”.
